Using scents to get rid of skunks and keep them away

Effective fencing to keep skunks out:

Create a recessed fence to block the skunk from getting back into their den. A recessed fence means that you will have to dig a trench around their den for the bottom of the fence to go into. You do this otherwise the sunk will try to dig under the fence to get back in.

Once you have placed the fence 6-12 inches into the ground and surrounded the den, place boards or cicken wire about 1 foot back from the fence. This will discourage the skunks from trying to dig under the recessed fence.

Scent repellant and deterrents for skunks

Use scent repellant. No creature wants to live in a place that has harsh of disturbing smells, even if it is a skunk! You can make one of the following recipes to keep them away, and the recipes should not bother humans. Use one or all of them for maximum success:

Mothballs to get rid of skunks

I remember my Grandma used to get me to put mothballs all around her garden in small cups with vents on the sides to keep cats and other animals from using her garden as a bathroom, and eating some of the vegetables. It worked like a charm.

Well, they also work for skunks, and a few of these will be sure to keep the skunk(s) from returning to its den!

Mothballs are not a natural recipe, and can be harmful to humans and pets and that is why it is recommended you keep them outside, and inside a protected cup with vents in the side. Use as a last resort (or temporarily) when all else fails.

Essential Oil Mixture

  • 250ml water
  • 2 Tsp lavender oil
  • 1 Tsp pennyroyal oil
  • 2 Tsp eucalyptus oil
  • 2 Teaspoon almond oil
  • 1 Teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 Teaspoon lemon juice

Boil water. Remove from heat then add the rest of the ingredients. Let mixture cool.  Pour into a spray bottle and spray the entire den area. This mixture will also keep away insects, aiding in getting rid of the skunks.

For a more potent recipe, double or triple up the ingredients below water.

*Note: you can also add a dash of vodka to the mixture for that extra kick in potency! It has also been said that garlic can help keep away skunks, but this has not been verified.
